What Goes Into a Resin Bound Driveway
If you're looking into a resin driveway, the most important thing to understand is that the finish you see is only the top 18 mm or so. What makes it last is everything underneath. A resin bound surface is flexible enough to cope with normal use, but it can't bridge a base that's cracking, sinking or holding water. Lay it over a tired drive and the problems come straight back through.
That's why we start every quote by looking at your existing surface. If your tarmac or concrete is stable and well drained, we can often lay resin straight over it, which is quicker and cheaper. If it's breaking up, we dig it out and build a new base, usually a compacted, free-draining sub-base topped with a permeable binder course. Then the resin and aggregate are mixed in small batches on site and trowelled to an even depth, with edging to hold everything neatly in place.

What's included
What's Included in Every Resin Driveway
Base assessment
We check your existing surface, levels and drainage before we quote, and tell you plainly whether it can be overlaid or needs digging out.
Dig-out and new sub-base
Where a new base is needed, we excavate, remove the old material and lay a compacted, free-draining sub-base with a permeable binder course on top.
UV-stable resin and graded aggregate
We recommend UV-stable resin for open, sunny drives, because it resists the yellowing that cheaper resins can show. It's mixed with clean, dried, graded stone.
Edging and drainage
Block, brick or metal edging to finish the borders, plus drainage channels at the garage or doorstep where your levels need them.
Your choice of colour
A range of natural stone blends to suit the brick and render of your home, with samples left with you before you decide.
Aftercare guide
Clear guidance on when you can walk and drive on it, and how to keep it looking its best for years.
Costs
How Much Does a Resin Driveway Cost in Milton Keynes?
Most people want a price before anything else, so here are typical figures for Milton Keynes. The two things that move the price most are the size of the area and whether your existing surface can be overlaid.

| Option | What's included | Typical time | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overlay on a sound base (per m²) | Prep, edging, resin bound surface | 1–2 days | £50 – £75 per m² |
| New installation (per m²) | Dig-out, sub-base, binder course, edging, resin | 3–5 days | £85 – £130 per m² |
| Small drive, new (about 30 m²) | Full new installation | 2–3 days | £2,600 – £3,900 |
| Typical 2-car drive, new (about 50 m²) | Full new installation | 3–4 days | £4,250 – £6,500 |
| Large drive, new (about 80 m²) | Full new installation with drainage | 4–5 days | £6,800 – £10,400 |

What affects the cost of a resin driveway?
- Area. Resin is priced per square metre, so a bigger drive costs more overall, though the price per m² usually drops a little on larger jobs.
- The base. Overlaying sound tarmac or concrete is far cheaper than digging out and laying a new sub-base.
- Access and waste. Narrow access, a skip on the road or a lot of old material to remove all add time.
- Edging and drainage. New edging, drainage channels, steps or a drop kerb (which needs council approval) add to the total.
- Aggregate blend. Some stone blends cost more than others, and UV-stable resin costs more than standard resin but is worth it on a sunny drive.
- Shape. Curves, cut-outs round trees or manholes, and lots of edges take longer than a simple rectangle.

Colours and blends
Choosing Your Resin Driveway Colour
Resin bound surfaces come in a wide range of natural stone blends, from warm golden and buff tones to silver greys, creams and darker charcoal mixes. Lighter blends brighten a north-facing frontage, while mid-tones hide tyre marks and leaf stains well. On older brick homes in places like Stony Stratford or Olney, warm natural blends tend to look most at home, while crisp greys suit the render and cladding of many newer Milton Keynes estates. We bring samples to the survey and leave them with you, so you can see them against your own house in daylight.
Bound vs bonded
Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded
The names sound almost the same, but they're very different surfaces. A resin bound surface has the stone mixed into the resin before it's laid, giving a smooth, porous finish that water drains through. A resin bonded surface is a layer of resin spread on the ground with loose stone scattered on top. That gives a rougher, gravel-like texture, but it isn't permeable, and loose stones can come away over time. For driveways, we recommend resin bound in almost every case.

FAQs
Resin Bound Driveway FAQs
How long does it take to lay a resin driveway?
An overlay on a sound base usually takes one to two days. A full new installation with dig-out and sub-base typically takes three to five days, depending on size and weather.
How long before I can drive on it?
You can usually walk on it after six to eight hours and drive on it after 24 to 48 hours. Cooler weather means longer curing times.
Will my resin driveway fade?
UV-stable resin resists the yellowing and darkening that cheaper, non-UV-stable resins can show in strong sunlight. The stone itself is natural and keeps its colour.
Is a resin bound driveway permeable?
Yes, a resin bound surface lets water through. To drain fully, it needs to be laid on a permeable base. If we overlay solid tarmac or concrete, water runs off rather than soaking in, so we'll plan the falls and drainage to suit.
